Give your child a special treat to break up the pressures of the school year. Your child will make memories that will last a lifetime…the kids are still talking all the time about all the great times they’ve had at our previous camps!

Your child will have a blast, getting plenty of exercise and having fun in a positive, nurturing environment. Aside from instruction in capoeira, dance, music, acrobatics, Portuguese Language, yoga and more, we will be doing fun activities, arts and crafts and games and going on field trips to fun places for kids of all ages! Our curriculum is designed to enrich the life of each camper – not only physically, but also mentally and socially.

By the end of summer, your child will be more fit, strong, focused, and respectful with better life-skills and self-confidence. The summer will culminate with our Summer Showcase Performance, a spectacular event that will allow our awesome campers to show their friends, family and community all that they have learned during the summer at Capoeira Karkara.

Camp Instructors

The camp is directed by Contra Mestre Betinho and Formada Sara Conceicao. They have been teaching capoeira to children locally since 2006 and share their passion for capoeira, fun and fitness with their students in the academy on a daily basis. Other qualified counselors training under C.M. Betinho will assist in teaching during the summer camp.

Contra Mestre Betinho who has been training for 24 years with this art form. He began training capoeira in his hometown of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil at the age of ten. Capoeira immediately became his passion, and he has not stopped training ever since. For his first five years of training, his teacher was Mestre Berico, a student of Grand Mestre Dinho of the International Group of Capoeira Topazio. In 1991, he began training with Mestre Dinho himself in a neighborhood in Salvador, Bahia. He earned his blue cord, deeming him a graduated student of capoeira, on September 25th, 1994.

As a graduated student, he traveled around Brazil, gaining experience as a teacher of capoeira and as a performer in cultural shows. From 1997-1999 he performed regularly at the Restaurant and Show House Solar do Uniao in Salvador, Bahia. From 1999-2000, he performed in shows daily at Restaurant and Show House Explode Coracao in Foz de Iguacu, Parana. From 2000-2003, he worked at the renowned Restaurant and Show House Plataforma I as a capoeira perfomer in Rio de Janeiro. Throughout this period of time in his life, Contra Mestre Betinho continuously taught capoeira classes wherever he was living, including the states of Alagoas, Parana and Rio de Janeiro. Also during this time, in 2001, he earned his green and white cord, which signifies the first level of “Professor” in the International Group of Capoeira Topazio.

In 2003, Contra Mestre Betinho auditioned with the Sambrasil Revue Corporation and was selected to travel to the United States for an opportunity to perform as a capoeirista for up to a thousand people nightly at the Beau Rivagecasino in Biloxi, Mississippi. After six months, he was contracted by Brazilian Tropicana Restaurant in Pompano Beach, Florida, to work as a performer in their cultural dinner show, where he worked until 2005. Since then, he has continued to work as a capoeira performer in a variety of shows all over Florida and other locations around the United States.

Contra Mestre Betinho contintued his capoeira teaching career upon his arrival in Florida. In April of 2006, he began teaching in the city of Boynton Beach, where he continues to teach today and has developed a very strong and successful group of students of all ages and levels, which is currently based out of the DeVos Blum Family YMCA of Boynton Beach. In 2007, he moved up another level to become a second level “Professor” in Grupo Topazio, and in 2010 he was honored by Mestre Dinho, who presented him with the new title “Contra Mestre” and a blue and white cord. Decades after Contra Mestre Betinho was first introduced to capoeira, his passion for and dedication to this art form remains as the central focus of his life. Contra Mestre Betinho’s unique style of capoeira has required that he also regularly train other martial arts, namely boxing, muy thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, to further strengthen his ability as a strong capoeira fighter, artist and performer.

Sara Conceicao has been training capoeira for over 13 years and received the title “Formada” (Graduated Student) in 2011. She is the co-owner of Capoeira Karkara Cultural Arts Center and married to Contra Mestre Betinho. She also has a strong passion for teaching children. Aside from teaching capoeira classes to children since 2006, she is also certified as a Kids Yoga Instructor and holds a Master’s Degree in Foreign Language Education. Since 2008 she has also trained as an assistant teacher in the Attention Dynamics Program, which is a comprehensive, cognitive-based, sensory-enriching approach to provide children the necessary skills to focus, de-stress, relax and be self-contained to develop meaningful connections to succeed in life. In her teaching to children, she incorporates her love of capoeira, yoga and languages to provide the most enriching experience possible to her students.

Our Hoopdance workshops are taught by Casandra Tanembaum, who trains capoeira under C.M. Betinho. A born teacher and joyful dancer, Casandra is thrilled to bring kids hoopdance classes to Capoeira Karkara’s youth enrichment programs! Casandra combines detailed instruction with loving guidance because “YOU CAN DO IT!” Having picked up hoopdance practice as a fun, expressive way to keep fit in 2005, she trained to become a HoopGirl Certified Workout Instructor in June 2008. A professionally certified Florida teacher pursuing a Masters Degree in Contemplative Education, Casandra has made education her life’s work. She loves sharing the coordination and focus of hoopdance with children, combining her passion for education and dance into a fun-filled instructional giggle-fest. Known to kids around her home city of Lake Worth, FL as “the Hula Hoop lady,” Casandra personifies exuberance for LIFE as a learning journey. She invites you to celebrate your body and the rhythm all around you!
