Palm Beach Open Capoeira Tournament 2019

The Palm Beach Open Capoeira Tournament 2019 is centered around developing healthy exchange between groups and individual capoeiristas for the purpose of mutual growth and community support. This year’s competition will be comprised of 2 categories

JOGO (Capoeira Game) & SOLO (Acrobatic Routine)

THIS EVENT IS FOR ALL KARKARA STUDENTS – KIDS AND ADULTS – AND OTHER GROUPS TOO! ALL ARE WELCOME! BRING YOUR FRIENDLY GAME!

JOGO Category (Capoeira Game):

Competitors will have two 45 second games and will be scored on the following criteria:

  1. Flow: Dynamic range of movement patterns, stringing together multiple techniques in creative ways. Incorporating a variety of attacks, defenses and acrobatic floreios into one’s game.
  2. Technique: Control of movement, executing each movement with precision, good balance, and confidence
  3. Defense: Reacting to your opponent, awareness of your opponent’s movements and reacts spontaneously and with grace and purpose. An actual “game” is taking place between the opponents.

SOLO Category:

Competitors will have between 20 – 45 seconds to perform a solo acrobatic routine for judges. They will be judged on the following criteria:

  1. Flow: Dynamic range of movement patterns, stringing together multiple techniques in creative ways. Incorporating a variety of attacks, defenses and acrobatic floreios.
  2. Technique: Control of movement, executing each movement with precision, good balance, and confidence
  3. Stage Presence: skill at entertaining, theatrical presentation, and ability to engage the audience

Divisions:

Junior Division – Kids 5 – 8 Years Old

Youth Division – Kids 9 – 13 Years Old

Junior Beginner Divison – (Less than 2 years of training)
Junior Intermediate Division – (2+ years of training)
Youth Beginner – (Less than 2 years of training)
Youth Intermediate – (2 – 4 years of training)
Youth Advanced – (More than 4 years of training)

Junior Division – Open
Youth Division – Open

Adults Division – Adults & Teens Ages 14 & up

Beginner Divison – (Less than 2 years of training)
Intermediate Division – (More than 2 years but less than 4 years of training)
Advanced Division – (More than 4 years of training)
Formado Division – Graduados, Formados, Instrutores

SOLO Category (Capoeira Acrobatic Solo Routine)
Open Division – All Competitors Will Compete Together

Time:

All Divisions and Age Groups will be staggered starts throughout the day.

Junior Division (Ages 5 – 8 years old)

Arrival no later than 9:30 am for check in

Opening Rodas Begin Promptly at 10:00am

Youth Divisions (Ages 9 – 13 Years Old)

Arrival 11:30 am for check in

Opening rodas will begin by Noon.

Adults and Teens Divisions (Ages 14 and Up)

Arrival 1:30 pm for check in

Opening Rodas begin by 2:00 pm

Jogo (Game) Rules and Regulations:

  1. Competitors are to wear their own academy’s white pants and cord, and the Palm Beach Open Capoeira Tournament Official Shirt, provided upon signing in.
  2. All non-Capoeira Karkará competitors must sign a waiver before check-in time.
  3. All competitors are required to check in upon arrival, where they will receive the event shirt. The event will begin promptly.
  4. Competitors will be grouped according to age and length of time training capoeira: (See Divisions above)
  5. Bring your friendly game. This is not a fight match. Malicious techniques such as Ponteira, Cotovelada, Galopante, Cabeçada, Godeme, and Asfixiante/Crucifixo are BANNED from this tournament. NO GRAPPLING!!! Banda, rasteira, tesoura, vingativa and their variations and counter-attacks are examples of acceptable take down techniques.
  6. The referee will indicate when each jogo begins and ends. Failure to heed the calls of the referee will result in the possibility of disqualification. Each round will be 45 seconds long.
  7. Competitors must perform all techniques with control and good form. If they are unable to perform a movement with proficiency and continually attempt moves beyond their ability to control safely they will be issued a penalty and possible disqualification.
  8. In the event of possible ties competitors may be asked to play another game as the judges request to make determining call on which competitor moves onto the next round or positional determination.

Solo Rules and Regulations:

Competitors will be divided up into 2 groups. Each competitor in the first group will have a minimum of 30 and a maximum of 45 seconds to perform his/her solo routine. The first whistle will sound at 30 seconds. The competitor may end at the sound of the first whistle or continue until the second whistle sounds at 45 seconds. The judges will pick the top 2 from the first group. This process will be repeated for the second group. The top 4 finalists will then be asked to perform ANOTHER solo (or the same one can be repeated) in order for the judges to determine the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners.

The referee will announce who will be playing in each round. After each round a certain number of competitors (determined by how many total competitors there are in that division) will be eliminated.  This process will continue until there is a division 1st, 2nd & 3rd place champion. The champions of each division will then be awarded.
